There's been a lot of movement and conversations around the number of American companies looking north as a place to efficiently scale their teams.
As the US continues to add barriers and bureaucracy to restrict immigration, skilled foreigners are choosing to skip the uncertainty and applying directly for permanent residency in Canada. And several companies are following the trend.
Google has just announced it will triple its workforce in Canada. Having one of the largest companies in the world investing so heavily in the country means an effective flywheel was built — It will keep attracting more highly skilled professionals from all around the world, which will attract even more investments and innovation.
If there is a war for global tech talent, right now Canada is winning — and the U.S. may be losing its edge. Toronto saw the biggest growth in technology jobs of any North American city over the past five years, outpacing San Francisco, New York and Seattle. Vancouver also made the top five.
